After decades of war, many Somalis immigrated to different parts of the globe seeking a better life. Today, there are approximately 2 to 3 million Somalis living in the Diaspora in three main areas: the Horn of Africa, the Middle East, and Western Europe and North America.

The contribution and support of the Somali Diaspora is vital to the Somali society and they are active in different sectors including education, healthcare and politics.  The Diaspora makes significant contribution to the Somali economy and the region as a whole through the remittance system which is estimated to be $1.3bn-$2bn a year.
