Global Somali Diaspora (“GSD”) is pleased to announce the appointment of Zahra Shirwa as its new Executive Director with immediate effect.
GSD is a non-profit organization that strives to advocate, promote, connect and organize Somali diaspora communities globally. GSD was established as a result of representatives participating in an international Somali Diaspora conference convened in Istanbul, Turkey in June, 2014. We believe in connecting the Somali Diaspora and unifying their voice is the answer to many mutual challenges and opportunities.
Zahra Shirwa has been part of the GSD team for the last two years, and was a member of the committee that coordinated the Global Somali Diaspora conference which was successfully held in Mogadishu from 13 – 15 August 2016.
Zahra Abdi Shirwa has over 18 years of community activism in the areas of public education where she concentrated on immigrant and minority kids getting access to education and after school programs in the USA. Previously, Ms. Shirwa was employed by USAID in Somalia as head of personnel department accountable for the contracts administration of approximately 270 Foreign Service Nationals (FSNs) where she played a central role in contract preparation and job classifications.
She worked for the Petroleum Finance Company in Washington D.C. in early 1990s where she helped organize annual conferences attended by executives from the US and global oil companies, OPEC, and foreign oil ministers. Zahra Shirwa is educated in Somalia, the United Kingdom and the US.
Jawaahir Daahir, Chairperson of GSD Board of Directors welcomed Zahra’s appointment and stated: “We are delighted to announce Zahra Shirwa as our new Executive Director; she is a valuable addition to GSD. The board and I look forward to working closely with Zahra and drawing on her experience and expertise in driving GSD to its next stage.”
